Evgeniy L. Choynzonov

He coordinated nine federal target programs (2006–2007, 2010–2012, 2016), six RFBR grants (2008–2015), an integrational project of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (2006–2007), grant of the administration of Tomsk region (2008), grant of the Russian Science Foundation (2016–2018),  Federal target program ‘Development of pharmaceutical and medical industry in the Russian Federation for the period up to 2020 and beyond’ (2017–2019), Federal target program "Research and development in priority scientific and technological areas in Russia for 2014-2020" (2017-2019).

Chief oncologist of the Siberian Federal district, Presidium member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, representative of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Association of Directors of Centers and Institutes of Oncology, Radiology, and Roentgenology of the CIS countries. He coordinates the development of proposals for priority areas in fundamental and exploratory research in the field of personalized medicine, high-tech health care, and health technologies.

Dr. Choynzonov is the Chairman of the Coordination Council in Tomsk National Research Medical Center, Chairman of the Academic Council in Tomsk National Research Medical Center, Chairman of the Academic Council in Research Institute of Oncology at Tomsk National Research Medical Center, Chairman of the Dissertation Council D 002.279.01 (Oncology, Medical Sciences), Chairman of the task group ‘Oncology’ in the Interdepartmental Council on medical problems of Siberia, Far East, and Far North.

A total of 21 PhD/MD theses and 10 DMSc theses were successfully defended under his supervision.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

 

Development of novel diagnostic methods, techniques of organ-sparing and reconstructive surgery, combination therapy, rehabilitation of patients with head and neck cancers, assessment of the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Evaluation of the role of the immune system and oncogenic viruses in the development of tumors.

In order to improve the efficiency of treatment and functional results in patients with maxillofacial and laryngeal cancer, Dr. Choynzonov has developed and implemented into clinical practice surgeries with simultaneous replacement of postoperative defects with endoprostheses made of porous titanium nickelide and microsurgical autotransplantation of tissues.

Dr. Choynzonov has developed new approaches to the treatment of cancer of the thyroid, parotid glands, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. These approaches are based on organ-sparing surgery combined with intraoperative electronic and neutron external beam radiotherapy. He developed new approaches to voice restoration in patients with cancer of the larynx, oral cavity, and oropharynx, paresis and paralysis of the larynx using the method of biological feedback on the basis of mathematical modeling. He succeeded in the investigation of the mechanisms underlying tumor cell resistance to free radical damage and identified clinical and epidemiological characteristics of primary multiple tumors of the head and neck.

EDUCATION

1976: graduated from Tomsk Medical Institute (Faculty of General Medicine). 1976–1978: clinical resident in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology.

1984: defended his thesis entitled ‘Treatment of patients with oral cancer and its impact on the immune system.’

1995: defended his doctoral thesis entitled ‘Cancer of the upper respiratory and digestive tract: viral, immunological, and epidemiological aspects and the assessment of treatment efficacy. ’

CAREER

1979–1984: junior research fellow in the Department of Head and Neck Tumors in the Siberian branch of the Soviet Research Center of Oncology, USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.

1984–1995: senior research fellow in the same department.

1995–2002: leading research fellow in the same department

2002–2016: Director of Tomsk Research Institute of Oncology

2016–2018: Director of Tomsk National Research Medical Center, Russian Academy of Sciences.

Since 2018: Director of Research Institute of Oncology, Tomsk National Research Medical Center, Russian Academy of Sciences.

PUBLICATIONS

Dr. Choynzonov has coauthored more than 900 works, including 24 monographs, 251 research articles in Russian and foreign journals. He owns 43 patents for inventions and copyright certificates.

MEMBERSHIP IN PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS

Dr. Choynzonov is a representative of the Russian Federation in the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies and Eurasian Community of Experts in Head and Neck Tumors.

Board member in the Association of Directors of Centers and Institutes of Oncology, Radiology, and Roentgenology of the CIS countries, Presidium member of the Russian Association of Oncologists, Chairman of the Tomsk Regional Society of Oncologists, Deputy Chairman of the task group ‘Head and Neck Tumors’ in the Scientific Council on Malignant Tumors of the Russian Federation, member of the Expert Council for the Evaluation of New Medicines, Medical Devices, and Methods of Diagnosis, Prevention, and Treatment at the Federal Agency of Scientific Organizations.
